Preying Mantis Egg Case (Mantodea)
October 5, 2007

I managed to take this photo of a praying mantis egg case while fighting the wind which not only kept making my photo out of focus, but was frequently pushing the entire plant with the egg case out of the field of view of my lens. I expect the eggs will overwinter and hatch in the spring.

I know what you mean about fighting with the wind- I tried taking a picture of a small spider in a spiderweb this weekend- the web was blowing moving backward and forward in the wind- and I was using an extension tube- which was causing an extremely shallow depth of field- so I just fired off bursts with manual focus set at a certain range- and hoped the spider would "bounce" into focus.

Your photos are beautiful- some of the best insect photos that I have seen.
